Author Biography

  • Andries Visagie, Stellenbosch University

Andries Visagie is professor in literature in the Department of Afrikaans and Dutch at the University of Stellenbosch. He completed his studies at the University of Stellenbosch and the University of Utrecht. His doctoral dissertation was devoted to a study of masculine subjectivity in Afrikaans fiction from 1980 tot 2000.

The research interests of Andries Visagie are still focused on issues regarding gender and sexuality in Afrikaans and Dutch narrative prose but many of his publications are also devoted to autobiographical literature and human-animal relations in literature. His interest in poetry is evident in his teaching and in his contributions as a reviewer of poetry publications. Publications by Andries Visagie appear regularly in academic journals including Stilet, Tydskrif vir Nederlands en Afrikaans, English Studies in Africa and Journal of Literary Studies. He also contributed chapters to book publications such as Perspektief en profiel (with H.P. van Coller as editor), Criticism, Crisis, and Contemporary Narrative.  Textual Horizons in an Age of Global Risk (edited by Paul Crosthwaite) and The Cambridge History of South African Literature (edited by David Attwell and Derek Attridge). With Judith Lütge Coullie he edited the book Antjie Krog: An Ethics of Body and Otherness (UKZN Press, 2013). Andries Visagie is review editor of Tydskrif vir letterkunde.
