Afrikaans poetry, Elizabeth du Toit, French forms of poetryAbstract
When the twenty-year-old Elizabeth C.M. du Toit made her debut in 1945, she was only the third published Afrikaans female poet. Critics responded - not unjustly - negatively to this infantile effort. They did, however, fail to notice her relatively crafty use of difficult French forms of verse, such as the triolet, rondel, rondeau and the villanelle. In this regard, she was one of the pioneers of Afrikaans poetry.
